IT Policy

The following policy has been put in place to try and keep our network functional for all who use it. If you do not abide by them, your use of the network, and/or of our entire space, may be revoked. You agreed to these policies by signing your membership.

This policy provides guidelines for the protection of on-site information technology assets and resources to ensure integrity, confidentiality and availability of data and assets.

Any physical access to the server room and its contents is prohibited to everyone who isn’t an IT Support staff member or Makerspace Adelaide leadership. Violation of this policy will result in immediate termination of membership and be prohibited from accessing Makerspace Adelaide site. Anyone becoming aware of a breach to this security requirement is obliged to notify the IT Manager immediately.

All security and safety of portable technology, (laptops, projectors, computers, screens, switches, iPads) will be the responsibility of the individual who it has been issued. The individual is required to use only networked logins and to ensure the asset is kept safely at all times to protect the security of the asset issued to them. In the event of loss or damage to any IT equipment, the IT Manager will assess the incident to determine if the individual will be required to reimburse the site for the loss or damage. If the individual is determined to be at fault, they must reimburse the amount agreed upon by the IT Manager and Makerspace Adelaide leadership.

While Makerspace Adelaide does back up and protect the data saved on-site by staff, volunteers and members, it is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that any personal data is backed up by themselves. Makerspace Adelaide takes no responsibility for lost or corrupted data saved on-site.

Every staff member, volunteer and member will be issued with a networked login to access the site technology and will be required to set a password of their own choosing upon first use. Each password is to be six characters long and is not to be shared with anyone else. IT Support staff are responsible for the issuing of logins for all staff, volunteers and members.

Staff, volunteers and members are only authorised to use site computers for projects or work pertaining to their use of the space. They are also authorised to access social media sites and personal utilities. Malicious sites (pornography, virus related material, illegal material etc.) is not accepted and will result in immediate termination of membership and be prohibited from accessing Makerspace Adelaide site.

Any illegal activities are prohibited and will result in immediate termination of membership and be prohibited from accessing Makerspace Adelaide site. All information obtained on said activities will be passed onto the appropriate authorities.

While Makerspace Adelaide will never distribute your information we still hold the right to record your metadata and usage of our network to help manage the health, security and capabilities of our IT infrastructure.

You are expected to honor our privacy policy, which includes not intercepting communications not intended for you, not disrupting others' communications, and so forth. This also includes not trying to connect to machines for which you have no authorization. Such attempts, or use of scanning tools to discover such machines, is prohibited.

This policy provides guidelines for the use of personally owned notebooks, smart phones, tablets and other portable technologies for site purposes. All staff, volunteers, members and guests who use or access Makerspace Adelaide's technology equipment and/or services are bound by the conditions of this Policy.

Each person who utilises the BYOD program agrees:

  • Not to download or transfer sensitive information to the device from the Makerspace
  • Adelaide network. Sensitive information includes intellectual property, branding, any
  • documentation relating to operations of the site, administrator files and records or anything
  • pertaining to the organisation without direct approval by staff.
  • Any data loss from your device while connected to the Makerspace Adelaide network
  • is on the responsibility of the organisation.
  • Access to your device by other individuals is the responsibility of the device owner.
  • The organisation does not have any obligation to protect your device in any way.
  • To abide by Makerspace Adelaide's internet policy for appropriate use and access of
  • internet sites etc.
  • There is to be no malicious or illegal use of a device on the Makerspace Adelaide
  • network.

The network is run on a best-effort basis. This means that we will make every effort to keep it up at all times. Makerspace Adelaide depends on it for its own operations as well, but as we are a volunteer organisation, we cannot make any guarantees about its availability.

You are expected to use reasonable shared-bandwidth behavior.

This means not continuously using large amounts of the shared bandwidth. We would like to do this on the honor system and not have to enforce limits. That means:

  • No unattended downloads (eg: downloading files for use later or at home. We ask you to download responsibly. Download files that you actively need for your projects only).
  • Avoid background processes. Please try and make sure background applications such as chat software, update applications, background downloads, etc, aren't running on your devices.
  • Nothing that would require legal action.
  • If you know you're going to have to schlurp down something truly enormous, try to throttle it yourself, using client-side traffic shaping.

As a rule of thumb, expect that our total available bandwidth is equivalent to a low-to-medium-end cable-modem connection. But unlike your connection at home, this one is shared by dozens if not hundreds of people. Please do your high-volume downloading at home, and not here. Please use common sense.

Our wireless network is accessible to all on site. All guests, members and volunteers are welcome to use our wifi as long as you respect the IT policies listed here.

Our wired network is directly managed by our IT Team. There should be no reason for any individual to connect, change, or remove any wired network connections unless under direction from the IT Team. If there is a valid reason to connect a device to the wired network, you must talk to the IT Team who will be the deciding factor on if it's applicable.

The IT Team manage our on site servers. These are used to upkeep and maintain our network and infrastructure. Anyone found tampering with this infrastructure by deploying any conflicting server software, DNS, DHCP, or any network control/managing software will be banned from the site.

There is currently swipe card access for the site with cards issued on approval by Site Manager or higher. Access can be tracked and who has entered. Any tampering or damage to this system is an immediate ban from the site.
